Tonight is my daughters Senior Prom, so I have been making garters for her and a few friends. I was surprised to learn that prom garters are not a tradition everywhere, just in our part of the country. I would be interested to know if they are a tradition where you live. Garters were part of prom for me, so the tradition has been around here for a long time!
The only cricut was the NY Yankee garter. It was a last minute request last night. I had to make do with what I had on hand, but I love how it turned out. The logo button is covered in ribbon, and the NY logo is heat transfer vinyl! I love how they each chose a garter individual for them-they are all so different. I can't wait to see them all dressed up tonight!!!

Hmmm... not for us - just for weddings. Seems a little "risque" for a prom - hee hee
They are beautiful and would love them for a wedding or favors.
I know- I think it is a bit "risque"!!!! The guy takes the garter off and wears it on his arm. They all do it at the same time.
They did this back at my prom, and that was 25 years ago!!!!! I didn't think anything of it. But now that I'm the MOM.... I don't know where the tradition came from?!!
I'm from NC and no prom garters here. They are beautiful but I wouldn't want a high school boy going after my daughter's garter-they are teen boys...LOL! I will definitely steal your idea for my daughter's and neice's weddings though! Great work!
I agree! As a mom I think the tradition should be done away with. I'm surprised it's been around so long!
Denise, I live in California, no Prom garters here! Do not need to encourage that kind of behavior... haha.... they came out cute though!
They are all so pretty! How did you print the names onto the ribbon? Thanks for sharing your great ideas!
Hey Denise-they are so pretty! I live in GA and have never "heard of such". I think it is cute though...as long as there are enough teachers around to keep an eye on things...LOL!
Stefeni,
To print on the ribbon first print your words on cardstock. Then tape your ribbon over the words and run it back through your printer. I use draft mode to minimize the ink bleeding.
The high school my kids attended has the Prom garter tradition also. They attended a Catholic high school in Kansas City, MO. We had lots of fun matching them to the girls dresses.
NJ, no such traditiom here....as long as there are plenty of teachers around to supervise the removing of the garter then I think its a cute tradition.... they came out really cute!
I grew up in Florida and that wasn't a part of our prom traditions. My parents would have flipped!!! They are beautiful though!
I grew up in Syracuse, New York. I now live in Columbus, Ohio. I have never heard of "prom garters" before. When I first read what you were making - I thought thank heavens my daughter didn't have one of these for me to worry about! I am not a prude by any stretch of the imagination but I like the idea of waiting till the wedding day for the removal of the garter.
Not sure that I like the idea myself (I chose not to have a garter at my own wedding) but I see there are websites for Prom Garters so they are not unheard of.
I have to say the garters were lovely and I am sure the girls will ahve been thrilled to have such gorgeous, personalised garters to match their gowns.
We definitely do garters where I am from!! Me and my girlfriends all did a "garter" shot. I think you mostly only have legs like that for a short time in your life hahah! I would love a quick tutorial if you make another one. =)
I'm in Indiana... and no such thing here. My parents would've not likely let me wear one if it were a tradition here when I went to prom.
I'm from Central Illinois and in fact a junior in high school...Garters area tradition here! They really are just a fun little accessory and i do not see them as risque or any kind of big deal (:
